Letters from the Marked Tree Children
Marked Tree Pen Pal Program
We have been told that the first letter to go this week April 21st 2008
Part of our Reunion will be a trip to the Moving Wall in a little town of Marked Tree, AK. (just over the river from Memphis)The town is going all out for us and has a full agenda for us while we are in the area. They have worked very hard on this project.
One of the projects that they would like is to have the school children write you a letter. I am not sure what these letter’s will contain, but the idea is to start some kind of pen pal relationship between the men of C and E 2/5th. I think that they just want to thank us for serving, something that so many people forgot to do in the 1970’s. I have supplied them with your snail mail address so, look for this in the coming months.
When you receive your letter from these children PLEASE write back at least once. If you don’t want to be a pen pal that will be ok, but with all there effort I hope that each child will get at least one letter back. This doesn’t have to be fancy or long, just a short note to express your feeling about their letter. This might be the perfect time to share your feeling about how we should treat the next generation of Military. This really is a chance to do something very GOOD. I have selected 58 of you based on my knowing that you will respond to these kids.
We plan to have a meeting place for anyone that establishes a pen pal and wants to meet that child. We will meet them at the dinner location and not in front of the wall.
Personally, I cant wait to get my letter. I plan on taking my student something to remember our visit to the Traveling Wall in Marked Tree AK.

The Marked Tree Pen Pal
program is working as of today. The children of Marked Tree (city that
has adopted C E 2/5th ) asked if the kids could send out letter to us.
I have supplied them with 65 names and address for this project. I
think that they want to thank us for serving. The idea is for us to
respond to there letters and become a bit of a pen pal. Those kids will
be in the city for us to meet on our trip to the Wall.
I sent out an e-mail to the 65 men and the response has been very positive indeed. I have the feeling that there will be tons of Marked Tree school children to meet us. I am planning on bring some trinkets for them. I really cant wait to get my letter and send something back to those children.
We will open up a web page for anyone wishing to publish their letters from and to the kids.

I received this letter
I know it is not easy being a military wife or girlfriend. I know
they have had many sleepless nights and lonely days and for some it was
not only while you were away but when you returned and had to get
settled back into everyday life. The saying of "Behind every good man
is a good women" truly applies to military wives and girlfriends.
Tree, I can hardly wait to meet you and the others, just to hug your neck and thank you. I feel a kinship with you already, this event is going to be life changing for all of us.
Let me add a little about what I told the members of the Chamber of Commerce last week. The park where we are going to have " the Wall" sometimes floods in the spring and late fall but we do not remember it flooding in September but any way a lady at this meeting ask us if we had a backup location and I told her " We won't need one, ever since Danny first mentioned this to me, the Lord has blessed. He has provided the funds, the volunteers and God is even sending your guys to us. It will not rain the week of September 23-29. The park will not flood." She answered "Okay, but do you have a backup location?" I answered " Yes, but just to comfort ye of little faith, because it will not rain while "The Wall" is here."
This is going to be a wonderful week and God will continue to bless because we are giving Him the Honor for allowing us to do this.
